History

Founded 1943 in Rhode Island. One of the longest-running private radiology practices in the country. Highly unusual "privademic" model: physician-owned PC (not employed by the university) while simultaneously serving as the academic radiology department at Brown University. "We are a wholly owned physician operated practice owned by the physician group — the shareholders of RIMI — yet we are the academic department at Brown University Medical School" — President John Pezzullo, MD. Joined Strategic Radiology Aug 2024 to strengthen independence and gain shared resources. SR Coalition: first Rhode Island member. Growth history: added Radiology Associates (3 locations) in 2015. ACR Centers of Excellence designation for outpatient offices. Joint Commission accreditation for academic and community hospital departments. Most extensive 3T MRI network in RI. National/international radiology society leadership roles held by RIMI radiologists. 30+ residents and fellows annually — one of largest private practice radiology training programs in the US.

Technical Component

Owns and operates 16–18 private outpatient imaging facilities throughout RI (TC). PC reads at 11 hospitals in RI and MA including: Hasbro Children's Hospital, Miriam Hospital, Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, Roger Williams Medical Center, Women & Infants Hospital, Sturdy Memorial Hospital (Attleboro MA). Most extensive 3T MRI imaging network in Rhode Island.
